Daniel Webster could have been talking about the Republican majority in the 2015 N.C. General Assembly. Not only do they mean to govern, they also mean to insure that only they can govern. Having the most restrictive ballot access laws in the nation isn't enough. Nor is gerrymandering electoral districts to guarantee Republican victories.

The Republicans want to make GOP stand for Grand Only Party. They're perfectly content with keeping North Carolina a one-party state, as it was for many years under the Democrats. They just want it to be their party. Lenin, Stalin and Khrushchev would be proud.

Resolve for Liberty in 2015

The Libertarian Party of North Carolina Annual State Convention will feature a panel discussion on “How to Win in North Carolina.” Participants will include, campaign managers Rachel Mills and Jason Joiner plus our 2014 electoral victor Jonathan David Baird (Burke County soil and water conservation supervisor). Thomas Hohman, Union County LP chair, will moderate.

The presentation by our gala banquet speaker will dovetail into this discussion. John Davis, a renowned political analyst, will talk about what the LPNC can do to position ourselves to take advantage of surging discontent with the Democratic and Republican parties in North Carolina

In addition the list of participants in our second panel discussion, "Friends, North Carolinians and Countrymen ... Lend Me Your Ear,"  continues to grow. We have speakers from the American Civil Liberties Union, Grass Roots NC, NC Stop Torture Now, Moore TEA Citizens, and the Republican Liberty Caucus slated to appear.

The state Senate passed Senate Bill 2 today. This legislation, now headed to the state House, would allow magistrates to take a pass on doing their jobs if they didn't want to marry certain taxpaying North Carolinians.

It would allow magistrates and registrars of deeds to recuse themselves from dealing with same-sex marriages because of “any sincerely held religious objection.”

National chair Nicolas Sarwark will be our first speaker. The topic of his address will be “Show Up, Be Nice, Win.” Born in 1979, Nicholas is an unabashed, second generation Libertarian with a strong commitment to fighting on the party’s behalf against unfair ballot access obstacles and exclusion of qualified candidates from public debates.
