Vaccine Passports

With the number of folks in North Carolina who have been vaccinated increasing rapidly, various schemes to enable—or, in some versions, require—individuals to communicate their vaccination status are being widely discussed. LPNC Chair Joe Garcia issued the following statement today outlining the party’s position regarding government policy with respect to so-called “vaccine passports.”

“The Libertarian Party of North Carolina believes in every individual’s bodily autonomy. We also believe in every individual’s right to privacy, including medical privacy. We firmly stand against all encroachments by the government on those rights, including instances in which government compels private businesses to act on its behalf.

“We urge all local, state, and federal government officials to refuse to participate in the development of ‘vaccine passports’ and to refrain from interfering in voluntary transactions between businesses and consumers.

“While we take public health very seriously and recognize the need for individuals to take appropriate precautions, we hope that all North Carolinians who value their individual liberty will speak up in their communities and to their representatives to stop the implementation of government-regulated vaccination passports.”
