Application to Recognize Three New Parties in North Carolina

This email was sent to the North Carolina State Board of Elections on the morning of July 9th, 2024.

To the Members of the North Carolina State Board of Elections,

I, Ryan Brown, Chair of the Libertarian Party of North Carolina (LPNC), am writing on behalf of the LPNC, as well as other non-major parties and unaffiliated voters, to implore you to take advantage of the opportunity you have today to reverse an egregiously anti-representative decision you made on June 26 when you did not accept the requests by the Justice for All Party, the We the People Party, and the Constitution Party to be recognized as official parties in our great state of North Carolina.

Especially in recent political discourse, we hear the term “democracy” thrown around constantly. We are told that one major party or the other represents a threat to our democracy, or that we should fight for this election because “democracy is on the line.” The truth is, our democracy is only as stable to the degree of trust that our population has in the elected officials who would govern them and the degree to which they are representative of the people.

Tar Heel Libertarian - June 2024

Volume 3, Issue 20 | June 2024

"Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself." -Milton Friedman

In this Issue...

Happy almost Fourth of July! This month's Tar Heel is coming in hotter than a North Carolina summer day, and only two days late for the month (if you can write, edit, build content, or have some other creative skill to offer, we really need some help). Most importantly, filing is open for a number of local races, many of which have the potential to be unopposed or only have one other candidate. Details are in the newsletter, but please, check your local board of elections and then reach out if you are interested in potentially running, and soon, as many close this week.

In this edition, Ryan makes the case that we are winning, Dr. Mike Munger shares his thoughts on how your vote matters, Rob Yates offers some thoughts on the immigration discussion the country is currently having, and we give you the text from all the speeches at the More Voices, More Choices rally from earlier this month. Liberty iNC is seven episodes deep in season 4, and there are a few new open positions in the LPNC, including a paid internship position.

David Hosely writes to his local newspaper about the meaning of freedom as we enjoy the Fourth, Matthew Kordon proposes some Libertarian solutions to environmental challenges, the Mises Club Carolinas has an August event with spots still open, and Liberty Babes is doing its thing.

LPNC Expresses Strong Disagreement with the NCSBE Decision

LPNC Expresses Strong Disagreement with the NCSBE Decision

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 27, 2024 (RALEIGH) – The Libertarian Party of North Carolina (LPNC) is deeply disappointed, though hardly surprised, with the North Carolina State Board of Elections (NCSBE) decision yesterday to limit the choices of the people of North Carolina in keeping the We the People Party, the Constitution Party, and the Justice for All Party off the ballot in North Carolina.

We resoundingly reject this partisan and anti-American decision that mocks the concept of democracy and destroys any pretense of representative government. Alternate parties and candidates already have a hard enough time working within the rules. This action from the State Board of Elections is just added election interference.

"The NCSBE is another tool in the vast arsenal the Uniparty wields against the majority of North Carolinians," said LPNC chair Ryan Brown. "Right now, the Democrats control the NCSBE, so they're making decisions that benefit their candidates. This is ironic coming from the party that cries about democracy being on the ballot, but not surprising from that same party that arbitrarily only put one candidate on the Presidential preference ballot."

"If independent voters were not prohibited by statute from being appointed to the NC Board of Elections, this decision would likely have been different," stated Libertarian gubernatorial candidate Mike Ross. "If you agree that it is patently unfair to deny over a third of all voters any say in the administration of election law, then you see how important it is that we vote out the status quo."

"Just the Uniparty doing Uniparty things," added LPNC Communications Director Rob Yates. "In all seriousness, along with the Republicans, the Democratic party is the most dangerous threat to democracy in North Carolina, but I'm not worried. They got burned earlier this year in the most humiliating fashion for doing the exact same thing. The Democrats didn't learn their lesson then, or they are willing to eat the fine, but this time I suspect they'll suffer at the ballot box. People are sick of not being represented, they're sick of these hack political games the Uniparty plays to disenfranchise them, and they're sick of the failed Uniparty ignoring them."

The NCSBE left open the possibility of reversing its decision after further investigating the petitions. The LPNC implores the board to stop this partisan game playing and recognize these three parties.

Third Party Voices Rally

More Voices, More Choices: Peaceful Rally and Demonstration for Third-Party Recognition in Raleigh at North Carolina State Capitol

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 12, 2024 (RALEIGH) – On Friday, June 14, 2024, from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM, members of the Libertarian Party of North Carolina and several other third parties will participate in a peaceful rally and demonstration titled "More Voices, More Choices" at the North Carolina State Capitol. This event aims to raise awareness about the importance of political diversity and to advocate for the rights of third-party political groups in North Carolina.

Two years ago, a lawsuit sponsored by major party donors challenged the Green Party NC state-certified petitions in order to delay their ballot access and subsequent campaigns by their candidates. There are indications that third parties could face the same legal obstruction tactics even though the Green Party won its case earlier this year. The judge’s decision declared the suit “frivolous” and awarded the Greens minor financial damages, a very small price to pay for suppliers of  major party dark money.

This Friday’s show of camaraderie is organized by the We The People Party of North Carolina and will feature a multi-party lineup of speakers (some TBD), including WakeLP Chair, Travis Groo, who will moderate the discussion, and LPNC Vice-Chair Sean Haugh, who will participate as a speaker. They will highlight the need to break the stigma of voting against the two-party system and how independent candidates work at a great disadvantage to ensure fair representation for all political voices in the state.

Event Details:

Date: Friday, June 14, 2024
Time: 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM
Location: North Carolina State Capitol, Raleigh, NC

This event calls for the North Carolina State Board of Elections (NCSBE) and state legislature to support the petitioners' needs for a prompt and fair decision-making process and furthermore, to recognize that frivolous lawsuits are products of dark money PACs intended to delay candidate recognition and stall campaigns.  We invite supporters of fair political competition to join us in this peaceful rally to show their support.
