A recent series of articles in the Raleigh News & Observer detailed how a little-known company based in Georgia has deployed hundreds of roadside automated license plate reader cameras (“ALPRs”) in North Carolina that police can access to monitor who goes where and when, 24/7/365 with no warrant required. The data are recorded and stored for 30 days, so they can check on your movements retroactively.
Flock Safety has been doing business in North Carolina sine 2017 and now has contracts with at least 80 law enforcement entities here. Each of those departments has the option to share the data from their cameras with other agencies—both in NC and in other states—so in theory, the police can track your entire cross country road trip, from Manteo to Malibu.
