Members are appointed to the University of North Carolina Board of Governors because they’ve raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Republican Party, even though some are Democrats.

Directors of the N.C. Rural Economic Development Center, a taxpayer-funded nonprofit agency created by Democrats to help rural communities, award grants to organizations they’re involved with. This practice continues under both Democratic and Republican administrations.

Just when it didn’t seem possible that North Carolina’s election laws could get more restrictive, the Republican majority has come up with a massive bill that would make it even harder for people to vote. As the majority party in the General Assembly, the Republicans have the power to pass any legislation. Having the power to do something does not give you the right to do it. Might does not make right.

The rounds of charges and counter-charges swirling around the Moral Monday demonstrations illustrate just how low political discourse in our state has fallen. It’s like children exchanging insults on a playground: “I know you are, but what am I.”
