Gay gun-rights organization endorses Cole
DURHAM (Sept. 26) -- Acting on their slogan "Armed Gays Don't Get
Bashed," the gun-rights organization
Pink Pistols endorsed Libertarian Christopher Cole for North Carolina
Lieutenant-Governor. The organization promotes Second Amendment activism
among gay and lesbian Americans, including training in gun use, as well as
working for equal rights under the law for sexual minorities.
"This was a natural for a Libertarian," Cole said. "We oppose the
initiation of force, including by the government, and enthusiastically
support the right to self-defense." While the Pink Pistols are not
affiliated with the Libertarian Party, their support for gun rights and
the LP's support of social tolerance make this a logical alliance for both
groups.
"The Pink Pistols are glad to see Mr. Cole carries to his campaign,
among his issues, those that we hold nearest and dearest - that all
citizens deserve the tools to defend themselves, their loved ones and the
integrity of their homes and homeland without let or hindrance and to
define the dignity of their lives as they see fit," said Gwen Patton,
national media spokesperson for the Pink Pistols. "We're pleased to offer
him our endorsement in his race."
Cole received a score of 100 percent from the Pink Pistols. Their
questionnaire included questions on restricting gun ownership of
law-abiding citizens, something that Cole considers anathema. Other
questions dealt with the right of consenting adults to contract
relationships without government interference. While single, Cole is
openly gay and is especially concerned about current political attacks
against himself and people like him.
Cole offered one wake-up call to his opponents. "You make a mistake in
using gay people as whipping-boys for your red-meat supporters," he said.
"The Pink Pistol's slogan puts you on notice that we aren't all good
little boys and girls, just fading away in the face of your attacks."
"Some of us fight back in the political arena; and some of us are
prepared to defend our persons, our homes and our rights, just as our
ancestors did in 1776 and 1861."
