1, 2, 3: Just say no to all amendments
DURHAM (Oct. 23) -- The Libertarian Party of North Carolina opposes all
three proposed amendments to the state Constitution which will appear on
the November ballot. The party's executive committee recently passed a
resolution opposing the amendments.
"Amendment One would allow local governments to engage in tax-increment
financing schemes, issuing bonds for corporate welfare projects without
voter approval," said Barbara Howe, state chair. "They are also called
'self-financing bonds,' but they are about as self-financing as your
credit cards."
Howe is also the Libertarian candidate for governor.
Amendment Two would institute the concept of asset forfeiture into the
NC Constitution.
"While this would only codify an existing practice, the NC Constitution
should not have anything positive to say about asset forfeiture," Howe
said.
The Libertarians oppose Amendment Three, which would change the terms
for county magistrates from two years to four, on principal.
"While we take no position on the content of this amendment, we advise
a NO vote simply because, like the other proposed amendments, the actual
text of the amendment is not presented to the voters on the ballot," said
Howe. "We should be told exactly what we are putting into our state
Constitution."
