North Carolina Delegation Makes Big Splash at Libertarian National Convention
Atlanta - The NC delegation to the Libertarian Party's national
convention in Atlanta made a big contribution to national Libertarian
Party politics by contributing both the party's Chair and Vice-chair.
Michael Dixon and Lee Wrights were selected by the 800-plus delegates
present from around the country and took office at the end of the
convention. They are already planning big things for their two-year
term as leaders of the national party. Mr. Dixon said "I am proud
that North Carolina Libertarians made such a great showing at the
convention and I will be working hard to represent all Libertarians
during my tenure as the LP Chair."
The NC delegation also included Barbara Howe, candidate for NC
Governor, as delegation chair, and 41 additional delegates from North
Carolina. The delegates participated in the historical selection of
the Libertarian Party's presidential nominee, Michael Badnarik.
Badnarik was selected after a third round of balloting on the
convention floor Sunday afternoon after three major candidates made
the choice difficult for delegates by stellar presentations of the
limited-government philosophy of the Libertarian Party in the previous
evening's debate. Mrs. Howe shared the general enthusiasm by saying
"What a convention! Choosing a presidential nominee was difficult
because all the candidates had such a wonderful understanding of and
commitment to the principles of liberty and constitutional government.
That's a problem we like to have." Delegate Susan Hogarth will be
coordinating the Badnarik campaign efforts in North Carolina.
Rachel Mills, a North Carolina delegate to the convention and
producer of the popular "Ladies of Liberty" calendar, announced at the
convention that she would give $500 of calendar sales proceeds to the
presidential nominee, Michael Badnarik, as well as contributing to
other important Libertarian candidacies nationwide. Later, she
announced that her calendar project - headed into its third year of
production - will be shaped into a "Ladies of Liberty PAC". Says
Mills "I plan to take the calendar project to the next level by
creating a network of strong, liberty minded activist women. The
calendar is for anybody, but the Ladies of Liberty Action Network is
for EVERYBODY"
Press coverage included C-SPAN , which broadcast most of the
convention live. A PBS production crew was also on-site filming a
documentary entitled "Crashing the Party" set to air in October, as
well as the educational program "Libertarian Alternative" produced out
of Hollywood, California.
