Raleigh activist seeks to bypass media indifference
Fed up with the apparent media blackout of the Libertarian Party and
Libertarian candidates, political activist Steven Hilton is taking it to
the streets.
"I'm sick of the seeing all the political news coverage on TV and in
the newspaper completely ignore the Libertarian Party," said Hilton, chair
of the Wake County Libertarian Party. "Especially in this election, when
nobody really likes Bush or Kerry and voter dissatisfaction is everywhere,
people need to know that the Republicans and Democrats aren't the only
game in town."
To address what he sees as a subtle or not-so-subtle media bias against
Libertarians, Hilton is taking the party message directly to the people in
the only way he can: Signs and old-fashioned legwork. He plans on holding
his signs at street corners so people will notice them.
"Nobody will see a sign posted in the ground. But everyone will notice
a person holding a sign," Hilton said. "I'm going to pick a different busy
intersection in Wake County each weekend. I'm going to be there holding my
signs for area residents to see and notice in the most visible way I can.
I'm going to spread the word despite the press's indifference."
This weekend will mark the beginning of Hilton's summer efforts, with a
visit to the corner of Capital Blvd. and Millbrook Rd. this Saturday, from
1 to 3 p.m.
