Libertarians Welcome Morgan Attack
The Libertarian Party is the target of an attack ad by North Carolina
House Co-Speaker Richard Morgan running on radio stations across North
Carolina. Local Libertarians responded with a mixture of amusement and
outrage at Morgan's far-fetched claims. The ad is a response to those run
by Americans for Prosperity, an independent organization not affiliated
with the Libertarian Party.
"It shows just how desperate 'Boss Hogg' is," said Sean Haugh, the NC
Libertarian Party's executive director. "Morgan will say anything to
maintain the lie that he's a fiscal conservative."
The ad notes that a former Libertarian vice presidential candidate,
David Koch, is a member of the Americans for Prosperity board of
directors. Haugh pointed out that Koch left the Libertarian Party more
than 20 years ago to help start the Cato Institute and other small
government advocacy groups.
"Of course Morgan is opposed to any group expressing the truly
conservative values of smaller government, since he has consistently voted
against these values while in the House," said Haugh.
Party officials thanked Morgan for the extra publicity. Tom Howe, the
party's webmaster and candidate for NC House District 32, said, "Morgan is
spending Republican money to put our name and positions on the radio,
however badly. I just think it's cool."
Tom Bailey, Libertarian candidate for U.S. Senate, said, "I have to
admit it feels good. Have we come a long way or what?"
"We're glad Morgan believes the Libertarian Party is instrumental in
his downfall," Haugh added. He pointed out that while the party has no
candidate in Morgan's state House race, "we'll be happy to take all the
credit we can when he loses his primary on Tuesday."
Libertarian Party bylaws prevent the party from openly endorsing
Morgan's primary opponent, Peggy Crutchfield. However, Haugh said,
"Republican and Unaffiliated Libertarian-leaning voters in Moore County
would gladly vote for anyone who can get Boss Hogg out of office."
"Nothing Morgan says can hide the fact that he's a big government
liberal who has increased taxes and spending while in office and used his
power as Speaker to run the House like a kindergarten playground bully,"
Haugh continued. "His own party disowned him and his hometown newspaper
adopted the 'Boss Hogg' nickname we gave him."
"The Libertarian Party is the only major party that can be trusted to
actually reduce the size and scope of government," Haugh concluded. "We
thank Boss Hogg for acknowledging this in his radio ads.""
