Libertarian runs as write-in candidate for 4th Congressional District
A Libertarian writer and activist is running as a write-in candidate
for U.S. Congress in District 4.
Maximilian Longley, 33, of Durham was certified by the State Board of
Elections August 4 as a write-in candidate. Under the requirements of
state law, Longley had to collect at least 250 signatures from registered
voters in order to have write-in votes for him counted. He turned in 294
verified signatures to qualify.
Longley will be the only North Carolina Libertarian running for
Congress this year. The North Carolina Libertarian Party executive
committee endorsed his candidacy.
"Thanks to the hard work of Libertarian activists - you know who you
are, and I'm very grateful - the people of the Fourth District will have a
real choice in November," Longley said. "We had to overcome an
unconstitutional law to have write-in votes officially counted by the
state."
Longley urged supporters of limited government to write in his name
instead of voting for either of the other candidates, incumbent Democratic
Congressman David Price and Republican candidate Todd Batchelor.
"The Republicans had the chance to support a candidate in their primary
who was sort of opposed to big government, but that guy didn't get
nominated," said Longley. "I'm the only remaining candidate who opposes
big government. Both my Democratic opponent and my Republican opponent
support big government."
As a candidate for Congress, Longley said that he offers the following
four point platform: "no war; no Federal support for abortion; no Federal
death penalty, and repeal; of all unconstitutional laws, even the popular
ones."
