Sean Haugh, Candidate for U.S. Senate, watches as SBoE Director or Administration, Johnnie Mclean, receives the candidate list from LPNC Chairman, Barbara Howe. LPNC Treasurer, Bob Dorsey, observes.

Libertarians File for Majority of General Assembly Seats

DURHAM (June 28) -- The Libertarian Party of North Carolina has become the first "third party" to field a slate of candidates in a majority of districts in both houses of the North Carolina General Assembly.

Libertarian Party officials presented their candidate list to the State Board of Elections June 28. It included 27 candidates for the N.C. Senate (one more than a majority) and 61 for the N.C. House of Representatives (a majority).

"To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time any North Carolina party, other than the Republicans or Democrats, has run a slate for a majority of the seats in the legislature," said Barbara Howe, LPNC State Chair.

"The fact that we're running almost three times as many candidates as we have before is a testament to the amazing growth of the LPNC in the last two years," said Sean Haugh, LPNC  Executive Director. "We're putting the Democrats and Republicans on notice: look in your rear view mirrors, because the Libertarians are gaining fast."

"We're even prouder of the increasing quality of our candidates," added Howe. "We expect to compete for the win this year, especially at the local level."

"Our candidate recruitment brought forward many outstanding citizens who want to bring about a fundamental change in public policy," she said.  "This year North Carolina voters will have a chance to completely change the makeup of the General Assembly.  With the current state of the budget in North Carolina, I'd say this couldn't happen at a better time."

In addition to challenging for a majority in the General Assembly, Libertarians are running candidates for all NC's seats in the U.S. House of Representatives for the third election in row. Haugh is also running as the Libertarian candidate for U.S. Senate.

There are a total of 150 Libertarians running for office across the state. In addition to the 88 people running for the legislature, there are 30 Libertarians running for county commissioner, four for county sheriff, in Guilford, New Hanover, Onslow and Wake counties. There's a Libertarian running for clerk of the court in Wake County and a Libertarian running for county surveyor in Harnett County

The Libertarian Party has also endorsed 12 people running for the non-partisan office of soil and water commissioner.
