Libertarian Convention elects New Officers
DURHAM (May 6) - The Libertarian Party of North Carolina joined the
nationwide effort to place a moratorium on executions. They passed a
resolution during the annual convention Sunday in Durham calling on
the North Carolina governor and General Assembly to stop executions
until the state can implement policies and procedures "to ensure the
death penalty is administered fairly and impartially." Click here to view the resolution (Acrobat format).
This review should also enact measures to minimize the risk that an
innocent person is executed and prohibit capital punishment for the
mentally retarded and persons who were under 18 at the time of their
offense, according to the resolution.
The resolutions cites the "considerable doubt about the fairness
and consistency with which the death penalty is applied," as well as
the competency of the investigation and defense of many individuals in
capital cases as "evidenced by the exoneration of numerous death row
inmates."
The LPNC opposes the death penalty, which it calls "state-sanctioned revenge, which never serves the cause of justice."
The Libertarians also chose a new executive committee at their
two-day convention. Barbara Howe, the 2000 Libertarian gubernatorial
candidate, was elected state chair and Lee Wrights was chosen vice
chair. Re-elected were Doug Adams as recording secretary, Bob Dorsey
as treasurer, Kevin Fortner as political director and Brian Irving as
press secretary. Several new people were elected to the executive
committee: Christy Dunovant, newsletter editor; Kevin Rollins, ballot
access director; Jeff Bentley, membership director, and; Hal Noyes,
outreach director.
Tom Bailey was re-elected member at-large, and Paul Johnson, Carey
Head and Julie Laurie were elected for the first time as members
at-large.
The convention also created the new executive committee position of
webmaster and elected Tom Howe to that position.
