Libertarian Chair Supports Democrat's Bill to Cut Food Tax
Sean Haugh, State Chair of the Libertarian Party of North Carolina,
expressed strong support for a bill to reduce the food tax by two cents.
House Bill 591 was introduced by State Representative Paul Luebke, a Democrat.
"Rep. Paul Luebke's campaign to repeal the food tax is a welcome,
if lonely, voice of sanity coming out of Raleigh these days," Haugh
said in his letter to the Durham Herald-Sun, adding, " His creativity
in keeping this important issue in the public eye should be commended."
"We have far too many taxes in this state. Most all of them should
be eliminated entirely. Rep. Luebke is absolutely right that the food tax
is the most regressive of all taxes, and should be the first to go. Then
he goes further to point out the plain fact that this money extorted from
poor people often ends up in rich people's pockets," Haugh's letter
continues.
"Luebke is not preaching "soak the rich" here. He's saying,
stop soaking the poor to make the rich even richer. Forcing everyone to
subsidize corporate welfare is an obvious and grave injustice."
"The only way I'd improve upon Rep. Luebke's excellent proposal
is to repeal the sales tax on non-food items as well," Haugh wrote.
" We could balance that by getting rid of porkbarrel projects such
as Global TransPark and Gov. Hunt's corporate incentives slush fund."
The Libertarian Party of North Carolina opposes the food tax as well
as other forms of taxation. Libertarians believe, as the North Carolina
Constitution states, that citizens have a right to the fruit of their own
labor.
"House Bill 591 combines tax refunds with more tax refunds,"
Haugh stated.. " What fiscal conservative could argue with that? All
North Carolina taxpayers will benefit by the passage of this bill."
