Our meeting with Haywood County Sheriff Greg Christopher last month was a positive one. While we don't agree with the sheriff on some issues, he does seem to have his heart in the right place. We have a plan to offer a replacement for the existing Emergency Management Ordinance rather than just criticizing its existence, and Jim Forrester and Jess Dunlap took that to Sheriff Christopher January 27th. We had about a 30-minute discussion with him. He was scheduled to have a meeting with Ira Dove Friday, January 30th and committed to take a copy of the proposed Libertarian alternative Emergency Management Ordinance to share with him.
Since the sheriff came to the January LP meeting, there seems to be some thawing of the part of the commissioners to revisit the current Emergency Management Ordinance and to consider other options. Thanks to everyone for showing up and speaking out. We have to keep that momentum going and press on so that we see this change through. We will keep everyone updated as events unfold.
