Libertarians oppose more restrictions on right to vote

Libertarians oppose more restrictions on right to vote

by J.J. Summerell
Chair, Libertarian Party of North Carolina

Just when it didn’t seem possible that North Carolina’s election laws could get more restrictive, the Republican majority has come up with a massive bill that would make it even harder for people to vote. Using the excuse that they are trying to combat voter fraud, the Republicans want to perpetrate an even greater fraud on North Carolina voters under the guise of restoring “confidence in government.”

Republicans claim to be the party of limited government. Now we see …

LP: Republicans refuse to end Obamacare

LP: Republicans refuse to end Obamacare

“Delaying Obamacare is a stay of execution for struggling small businesses and health care consumers in America” — Carla Howell, Libertarian Party executive director

When President Obama announced on July 2 that the employer mandate for Obamacare would be postponed for another year, he opened the door for one more Republican opportunity to repeal this destructive and costly program.

Big Government Republicans posture, pose, and pretend to cut destructive programs and harmful laws, but almost never vote to simply end them.

Why? Because they’re in the pocket of …

Executive Committee sets regional workshops

Executive Committee sets regional workshops

by J.J. Summerell
Chair, Libertarian Party of North Carolina

The Libertarian Party of North Carolina Executive Committee will be sponsoring a series of regional workshops around the state to conduct political campaign type activities.

These workshops will be held in addition to the committee’s business meetings.

The idea is for the executive committee to conduct some sort of political campaigning activity when we meet, rather than just hear reports. Vice chair Alex Vuchnich proposed this plan. and it was approved at the June 29 Executive Committee meeting.

Activities will be …

Libertarians applaud DOMA demise

Libertarians applaud DOMA demise

The Libertarian Party applauds the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision today to strike the Defense of Marriage Act, a federal law that discriminates against non-heterosexual marriages.

The Libertarian Party has supported marriage equality since its founding in 1971.

“The idea that people need permission from government in order to get married is inconsistent with the principles of secular government,” said J.J. Summerell, North Carolina Libertarian Party chair.

“Last time I checked, marriage was a sacrament.  The decision on who can or who cannot marry should be left to individuals …

Annual State Convention Focuses on Growth, Activism

Annual State Convention Focuses on Growth, Activism

Liberty in action was the theme and focus of the Libertarian Party annual state convention held in Flat Rock over the weekend.

J.J. Summerell, who was reelected state chair, noted that the 50 percent increase in party membership in 2012 can be attributed to the growing dissatisfaction of voters with the Republican and Democratic parties. “A healthy part of that growth can also be attributed to youth groups such as Students for Liberty, which are spreading like wildfire on college campuses,” he added.

That activism was evident …

Is Health Care a Right?

Is Health Care a Right?

by J.J. Summerell
Chair, Libertarian Party of North Carolina

Is health care a right?

No, health care is not a right.  Health care is a commodity.  Rights are conceptual, not material.  Consider things that are rights:

Right to free speech, right to assemble, right to contract, right to due process, right to privacy, etc, etc, etc

Health care is just a thing, not a right anymore than cars, houses and food are rights.  However, having said this, it is of utmost importance to point out that health care is one of the …

GOP Tax Fairness Plan is Unfair

GOP Tax Fairness Plan is Unfair

by J.J. Summerell
Chair, Libertarian Party of North Carolina

The tax reform plan announced by state Sen. Phil Berger is just another charade designed to make citizens think Republicans are actually reducing taxes. Calling it the Tax Fairness Act and claiming it’s the largest tax cut in state history is misleading at best.

In fact, it isn’t fair and it isn’t a tax cut. Senator Berger and the other Republican leaders at their press conference last week probably used the word “fair” hundreds of times.

No tax is fair. …

LP Statement on Boston Bombings

LP Statement on Boston Bombings

The Libertarian Party extends heartfelt sympathies to the surviving families of the victims and all who were harmed by the senseless and violent bombing in Boston on April 15 and its aftermath. We applaud the efforts of Boston-area residents and law enforcement officials who helped to remove the immediate threat of additional harm from the alleged perpetrators.

While we are relieved that the Justice Department has assured that the surviving bombing suspect will receive a civilian trial, we are troubled that, according to news reports, he …

Libertarians Oppose Welfare for (Met)Life

Libertarians Oppose Welfare for (Met)Life

RALEIGH (April 18) – The awarding of nearly $100 million in “corporate incentives” to MetLife, one of the largest insurance companies in the world, is a classic example of state and local governments playing the game of Reverse Robin Hood, robbing from the poor to give to the rich, a state Libertarian Party spokesman said in a statement today.

J.J. Summerell, Libertarian Party of North Carolina chair, said the party denounces all such corporate welfare as fiscally irresponsible and the practices should be stopped immediately.

Here is …
