Biographical information:

My name is C. Travis Wheat, and I am the Libertarian candidate for North Carolina State Senate, District 38. I have called Charlotte home for over seven years, and have worked in the financial services industry in risk and asset management positions at major Charlotte-based financial institutions during that time. I am from a small town in Oklahoma, and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Master of Business Administration degree, Finance emphasis, as well as Bachelor of Arts degrees in Psychology and Social Work. I am married and a soon to be father of twin daughters.

Candidate Statement

I believe allowing individuals to pursue their own interests will result in the greatest good, both for individuals, as wellas society as a whole. This belief stems from a fundamental faith in the goodness of individuals, each acting in their own interest without unnecessary limitations being placed on them (often by government). Conversely, I have noticed that forcedconcentration of power in the hands of few (often well connected and financed) people, especially when accomplished through use of government force, and often under the guise of the public good, almost never results in benefits for many.

Below are my brief, general positions on economic (fiscal) and personal (social) issues, which will tend to guide my thoughts on specific issues and are underscored by themes of personal freedom and responsibility. If you have questions about my position on specific issues, feel free to ask. Unlike many politicians, I will endeavor to give you a direct and honest answer.

Economically, I support truly free markets, neither providing special benefits to entities through government bailouts, special incentives, subsidies, etc. (which necessarily will be paid for by taxpayers) nor providing restrictions on competition. I believe that people spend money most wisely when it is their own, and allowing third parties (government) tospend other people?s money (taxpayers) is least effective, hence the inefficient and wasteful growth in government.

Personally, I believe in civil liberties — the right of individuals to act in whatever manner and to pursue whatever interests they choose, so long as those actions do not infringe upon the rights of others. Individual rights and freedoms should not be restricted by government or derived from membership in specific groups, but rather each individual has an inherent right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
